The Truth About Co-Washing

While chatting with friends and reading through hair magazines, you may have come across a term called “co-washing”. Sure, it sounds nice, but just what the heck is co-washing and when do you use it? The term is short for “conditioner washing,” when you wash your hair using only conditioner and skipping the shampoo. This method is a way to increase moisture for those of us with naturally curly or dry hair. If your hair is dry and in need of some extra moisturizing, co-washing could be for you.

Co-washing can be done in a few different ways. It can be done alongside your usual regiment of shampooing your hair as well as conditioning. But, it can also be used in place of shampooing altogether. This is usually done when your hair retains a lot of product buildup. If you suffer from extremely dry scalp, you can co-wash your hair up to three times a week.

So how do you co-wash properly? First of all, pick a conditioner with lots of nutrients like VO5 Salon Series Hydrate + Nourish Conditioner. Make sure your hair is saturated with water then take a comb to distribute the product from roots to ends. Once it’s been thoroughly distributed, use your fingers to massage your scalp. For added moisture, you can put your hair up into a top knot as you finish the shower. When you rinse, feel free to leave in a little bit of product to continue the moisturizing process!

Though co-washing may be a little unorthodox, it’s a wonderful way to keep your hair smooth and silky, especially in the summer months. After a few rounds of co-washing, your hair will be voluminous and well-defined, no matter the weather. Happy co-washing!
